In a recent video, Gary Vaynerchuck subtly suggested that filling your Instagram posts with as many hashtags as you can is no longer working and that you need to re-think. This got us wondering about our current method of getting as many relevant hashtags in our posts as possible…

Why Are Hashtags Important?
There are around 95,000,000 photos posted on Instagram every day! As a result, it’s difficult for Instagram to deliver the right content to the right people. Hashtags help your content be viewed by users most interested in seeing it. They also work as a great search and sort tool. Users can easily identify the content that’s most important to them.
Using the right hashtags allows you to take part in the conversations that matter to your audience. They help you connect with individuals with shared interests and work for monitoring your brand and promoting brand awareness.
Best Practices for Using Instagram Hashtags
1 Do Your Research
Having a good idea of which hashtags you should use will save you time and effort:
- Who are you selling or promoting to? Solve your customer’s pain points.
- See what your competition is doing. They might have some good strategies you can implement for yourself.
- There are so many resources out there. Find a couple tools that you like using. Let technology be your friend.
2. Create Branded Hashtags & Constantly Share It
Create your own hashtags for your brand and use them as much as you possibly can. Once your audience catches on that these hashtags are yours, they’ll start to search them when they want to see your content and they’ll use them when they’re talking about you. This is very powerful.
3. Keep Organised
Certain posts are going to perform better than others, and sometimes it’s going to be because of a hashtag you used. The perfect formula is always a fantastic post, that resonates with the audience. But if all your content is similar and the only difference is the hashtags you’re trying, then those that are getting the most engagement need to be used more often!
4. Use Trending Hashtags
Trending Hashtags will make you more relevant to your audience. But be sure the trending topic you choose is relevant to your brand. If you cannot integrate a topic into your brand identity then don’t use it.
5. Use Hashtags In Multiple Spots
Use the hashtag sticker to include branded hashtags in your stories. This will lead to generating brand awareness. Add your branded hashtags to your profile bio. As long as you add the # sign in front of the text it will become a clickable hashtag.
